MK40 / MK64

How to Connect with out buying a wiring kit.

Keyboard and Computer PS2 Connectors

Both connectors on the board are female PS2 (6 pin mini-din) connectors. A six foot male to male PS2 cable is included to connect the MK to your computer. If your computer or keyboard has the larger 5 pin din connectors, you will need to buy adapters. They are available at most computer stores.

MK Board Pinout

The MK40 & MK64 have a 50 pin IDC connector labled JP1. The MK64 also has a 24 pin IDC connector labeled JP2. These IDC connectors accept a variety of IDC connector pin counts. The connectors match the screen display seen while running the INTEST.EXE program (helps verify and debug your wiring).

JP1 Pins 1, 2, & 50 are grounds, Pins 3, 4, & 5 are Caps Lock, Num Lock, & Scroll Lock (2.1V) LED outputs, Pins 6 through 40 are input lines 0 through 34,  pins 41 through 44 are not connected, and pins 45 through 49 are input lines 35 through 39.

JP2 Pins 1 through 24 are input lines 40 through 63. (MK64 only)

MK40 Cables

The recommended way to connect a MK40 is with a 50 pin cable (SCSI cable without any blocked pins). A 40 pin cable (IDE hard drive cable without blocked pins) will also work, but you will need another cable to access inputs 35-39.

Pins 1, 2, and 50 are grounds. Pins 3, 4, & 5 are Caps Lock, Num Lock, & Scroll Lock. Cable pins 6 through 40 are input lines 0 through 34,  pins 41 through 44 are not connected, and pins 45 through 49 are input lines 35 through 39.

MK64 Cables

The recommended way to connect a MK64 is with a 40 pin (IDE hard drive cable without blocked pins) cable AND a 34 pin (floppy drive without blocked pins) cable. The 40 pin cables red stripe goes toward JP1 pin 1 and the 34 pin cable's non-stripe end goes toward JP2 pin 24.

The 40 pin cable has pins 1 and 2 as grounds. Pins 3, 4, & 5 are Caps Lock, Num Lock, & Scroll Lock. Pins 6 through 40 are input lines 0 through 34. The 34 pin cable has pins 1 through 5 as inputs 35 trough 39. Pin 6 is a ground, pins 7 through 10 are not connected, and pins 11 through 34 are inputs 40 through 63. (Note: you may use two 40 pin cables)

The INPUTS

The input lines can be connected to joystick, push button, coin and other type of switches. The other side of all the switches should be connected to ground. When the switch closes the MK device will send a key press code. When the switch opens the MK device will send a key release code. On switches with three terminals, connect the input line to the normally open (N.O.) contact and the ground to the common (COM) contact.

The LEDS

Each of the Caps Lock, Num Lock, & Scroll Lock LED lines connect to the anode of a standard 2.1Volts LED (not included). The cathode of the LEDs are connected to ground.

WARNINGS

Since the MK device draws its power from the computer's keyboard port, there is both 5 Volts and ground on the board. No do not let conductive objects touch the board while powered. Damage to the fuse in the computer may result. The optional keyboard may be plugged in or unplugged at any time, however there is a (small) chance that the keyboard or fuse may be damaged. It's your decision and your risk. Be sure to read the legal mumbo-jumbo on the ORDER page.

Last, but not least. Use care when inserting or removing connectors to avoid bending the board.

On the positive side, no damage will occur if any or all of the I/O cables (not PS2 cables) are open or shorted to either to each other or ground.
